Women and Football...

Enemy occupied territory- that is what this world is. - C.S. Lewis

I can't believe I love football. Ten years ago I was rolling my eyes and thinking "How in the world can he lay there and watch so much football"? Or "You'll pay how much to go see a football game"? Anyway, it has happened. I guess watching our boys play plus yelling for all of our nephews has turned me into a football gal. I am now just as interested (nearly) in who plays on any given football Friday and Saturday as Sid is. It is fun enjoying something that he loves.

I guess it is just a boy thing to want to play a game that is so rough and competitive. I always wanted to protect and keep our boys from harm. I hate the thought of them getting hurt in any way. Our greatest fear in life is that something bad might happen to our children. But, as a Mom I have to allow them to be the warriors that God intended them to be. Our boys have an incredible desire for adventure and intrigue and want to be the hero and warrior. God made them that way, and He made them in His own image. We want our boys to be leaders for the Lord and leaders for the women in their lives. We have to let them lead the way God intended them to lead. I was holding on too tight when mine were younger and a sweet friend gave me a book called "Wild At Heart" to help me get through the first of many football seasons. Really, she helped me to see through this book that Mother's can hinder their boys from being what God intends them to be. We have to have brave trusting hearts as mom's of boys to live this way.

This book was such a blessing and it took stepping out in faith and seeing that instilling God in our boys hearts is the MOST important thing for me to do. I then have to hug them and let them be men and spread their wings and fly. After all...how do I say this...I want them to serve and glorify God as strong warriors for Him in life no matter what. It could mean getting hurt in football, getting hurt at school standing up for God, getting hurt or dying for the Lord on a foreign mission field someday (or in the USA...mission field some day) or being a hero saving someone for God. I don't know. I do know that it is THE great adventure for them. What greater adventure can they have than championing Christ and bringing people to heaven with them? I think if I shelter them so much that they can't see the men they are supposed to be then what kind of husband and man for God will they be when they are grown?

As C.S. Lewis says of Aslan (the Jesus figure) in the Chronicles of Narnia..."Safe? Who said anything about safe? 'Course He isn't safe. But He's good."

Wild At Heart...page, 29-

Jesus is no capon priest. No pale faced altar boy with his hair parted in the middle, speaking softly, avoiding confrontation, who at last gets himself killed because he has no way out. He works with wood, commands the loyalty of dockworkers. He is the Lord of hosts, the captain of angel armies. And when Christ returns, he is at the head of a dreadful company, mounted on a white horse, with a double edged sword, his robe dipped in blood. (Rev. 19) Now that sounds a lot more like William Wallace than it does Mother Teresa.
No question about it- there is something fierce in the heart of God.

I pray that as mother's of boys will let them be the men that God intends them to be. Check out "Wild At Heart". It will bless you.

Blessings on your day! Amy

Now I can scream with the rest of them...I know what is going on...after 20 years of my kids playing sports, I am a total sports mom
I now text my boys through the UT games...won't talk about last week :(

I think this is a great book for single gals to read, too. It was eye-opening to see how men are wired for adventure at all times. And I don't know how I survived from January 7 until Sept. 4 without football!
