We are having a girl's retreat this weekend on Purity. I have been working on a lesson about purity from a biblical point of view. I asked our oldest son to give me some of his thoughts on it. Here is his short email and thoughts. I thought it was inspirational. Girls would rather listen to what a guy has to say about God and purity than what a middle aged Mom has to say about purity. Right? :)
How can a young man keep his way pure?
By living according to Your word.
I seek You with all my heart;
do not let me stray from Your commands.
I have hidden Your word in my heart
that I might not sin against You.
I am looking for a girl who loves God more than me at all times in our relationship, wherever we are. I am looking for a girl who knows her bible.
Girls, how important is it to find the perfect guy RIGHT now, or how important is it to "please" that sweet and handsome young man right now? How important is it in the long run, in the big scheme of things? How important is it when thinking of the cross, of eternal life, of the sacrifice and of heaven?
Nothing else compares, or is worth comparing to what God has planned for us. Not pleasing your boyfriend or momentary satisfaction. God's will for you is to have a good and Godly husband that is striving daily to live more like Him. If you are being pressured to have sex by your boyfriend then it does not sound like he is being Godly or good.
1 John 5:14-15 says: This is the confidence we have in approaching God: That if we ask for anything according to His will, He hear us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask- we know that we have what we ask of Him.
It is God's will for you to find that great guy. Pray and ask God for it. In my opinion, it is a prayer that you should be patient waiting on. Thinking you will find this guy in high school is probably silly. Before you say amen to this prayer, say thank you. Believe in what you are asking for and then be patient. Walk with Him staying in His word daily and continually and He will guide you to the guy of your dreams and He will not disappoint.
Let me warn you! NO MAN is perfect except Christ. No matter how dazzling his eyes are or smooth his voice is. He has the potential to sin and most definitely has sinned. I am thankful that God's grace covers our sins. He cover's yours too if you have already given in to sexual pressure.
What is God's will for you?
1 Thess. 4:3-8
It is God's will that you should be sanctified (set apart): that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong his brother (or sister) or take advantage of him (or her). The Lord will punish men for all such sins, as we have already told you and warned you. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live holy lives. Therefore he who rejects this instruction does not reject man but God, who gives us his Holy Spirit.
It is not God's will for you to sin. That includes impurity. You then ask, "How do I not sin, that is impossible." No it is not. Remember God tells us that with man it is impossible, but with God all things are possible. To do this you have to keep your gaze fixed on Christ. Can you see yourself going out and sleeping around or anything in that manner when you are reading your bible everyday, praying when you can, thinking of heavenly things, listening to spiritual music, and hanging out with friends that want the same things spiritually as you? Your mind will be on pleasing God not on pleasing yourself. Yes, you can do it.
Look to your future. Don't live for today. Be pure. Be pure for God. To please Him. He will bless you.
There is someone special out there for you. There is some Godly guy out there saving himself for you. It may seem impossible and crazy but there is. Even in the midst of all the people around you doing their own thing and living in the moment. You can look to the future and to how God is going to bless you. Just remember that God cares about you more than any guy can.
Your brother in Christ,
7 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith. 10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the dead.
